Plexiglas Sitters with Grandma and Me

$50 combined fee for each adult and child pair.

Jo Myers-Walker will teach how to create a Plexiglas sitter. What is a Plexiglas sitter you might ask? Participants will sketch on paper, trace design on to Plexiglas with a paint marker, put in toaster oven to slump or bend to sit or stand and finally paint. The class is designed for an adult and child to participate together. The adult can be a grandmother, grandfather, mother or father. The adult and child will each have a Plexiglas sitter and fun memories to take home after the class. Open to 10 participants. Register online or at The Center. An ongoing series of informal life drawing workshops. Three hours of extended poses and rigorous instruction to take your life drawing to another level. Douglas Pendleton will help you as you draw, and also provide demos and instruction during the breaks. Topics will vary from session to session but will include composition, proportion, artistic anatomy, geometric construction, chiaroscuro and the general mechanics of drawing. All levels welcome, and no sign up is necessary. Participants must be age 18 or over. Registration not required. Need not be a member of The Center. Please pay by cash or check at the beginning of each session.

Advanced Chinese Painting Workshop

Advanced Chinese Painting

  • Four 2-hour sessions for $150
  • (use supplies from Beginning Chinese Ink Painting)

Anyone interested in Chinese Ink and watercolor painting can enroll in this workshop. Previous classes are not required. This class is open to individuals who want to learn and improve their painting skills.  The four lessons will cover a combination of flowers, bamboo, insects and birds. The instructor will lead the class in each lesson and give each student her personal guidance. Paper will be provided for practice in class. Open to 8 participants.

About the Artist

Trúc was born and grew up in Vietnam.  Trúc (pronounced Chook and it means Bamboo) migrated to the United States of America and became a citizen in 1970. She graduated in University of Iowa in Art History with Honors. She studied under Mr. Ang Swee Hin who lives in Penang, Malaysia, a master of Chinese Art with the knowledge of the style of the 12th-18th century artists.

Trúc has held a number of one woman exhibitions and participated in numerous competitive and judged exhibitions as well.  She has taught brush painting in the United States, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.  Her works have been purchased by art lovers around the world and are found in collections in Malaysia, Great Britain, France, Australia, Sri Lanka, the United States and elsewhere.  In 2001 the Iowa City Public Library selected one of her works for its permanent collection.  In 2002 one of her paintings received an Honorable Mention Prize at the Hooverfest.  In 2012 Art of Mercy Hospital collected two of her works for their art collection.

Many of her works are on display at Melrose Meadow, a retirement community at 350 Dublin Drive, Iowa City, Ia.  Recently, She had a joint show titled Midwest Summer: Light & Warm with other artists at the Iowa at Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.  Her latest exhibition was held in Central College, Pella, Iowa in Nov. 2016.

A thorough introduction to oil painting and the still life genera. This class will cover basics such as brush care, and preparing a canvas to more advanced issues such as composition, direct vs indirect painting, and color theory. We will work with water soluble oils in order to minimize fumes in the classroom and facilitate easy clean up.
And here’s a materials list:

  •  Colors: Burnt Umber, Alizerine Chrimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Titanium white
  • Optional Colors: Cerulean Blue, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Lemon, Veridian Green, Venetian Red, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Cobalt Blue, Quinacridone Purple
  • Brushes: 4 Non Synthetic, Bristle Brushes, 2 – #6 brushes, 2 – #2 brushes• Wooden Palette
  • Rags (cut up t-shirt is best)
  • Primed canvas stretched or taped to a board, or a primed board, or oil-compatible paper.
  • Please bring a portable easel if you have one

Learn in a small class setting how to draw from a live model using graphite or charcoal. Students will learn fundamentals of portrait drawing, such as proportion, measuring, massing, volume, planar construction and chiaroscuro.

Soft graphite or charcoal pencil
Eraser
Drawing paper
Ruler
Sketchbook for taking notes

The figure often adds life to a scene

Please join us to draw/paint animated figures in the downtown area. We will begin at the Senior Center and venture out into the cool summer mornings capturing the sunlight casting over the figure to show facial form and folds on clothing. Jo will have handouts and instruction on proportion, value and skin tones.  We will have volunteer models and each other. Bring a folding chair, sketchbook and drawing/painting materials you enjoy.
