November’s Artist • Janice Bell
Value is the range of gray tones from black to white. Janice will discuss how value changes within a work of art work lead the eye and create interest. Information on how to create value maps will also be provided. Various art forms will be used as examples, from ceramics to wood, as well as artwork by the artists.
Janice’s paintings are inspired by spending time outdoors, hiking the woodlands of Iowa, gardening, and paddling lakes and rivers. Her message to viewers is to pause for a moment, take a deep breath, really look at their surroundings, and see the beauty that is all around them. Janice considers her paintings a respite from the everyday hustle and bustle of life and hopes that viewers will feel the same.
Janice has exhibited in juried shows across the state and became a signature member of the Iowa Watercolor Society in 1995. She began taking watercolor classes while living in New Orleans and continues her studies with various workshops, but for the most part, she is self-taught. She finds the mixing and blending of pigments on and off paper to be exciting and she delights in the challenge of creating a successful work of art. Over the years she has developed her own style of using rich saturated color and the play of light and shadow to capture the beauty found in nature.
